The Invasion of House Roaches in New York

Cockroach Control

You may have become so accustomed to having cockroaches around that you do not realize just how bad they are to have around, but they are. They cause food to become contaminated, emit an unpleasant odor and can cause some people to develop respiratory problems.

Allergens in their feces become airborne and also affect your health. Rest Easy Pest Control is here to make sure that you do not have to inhale harmful allergens due to the presence of cockroaches. Our goal is to protect everyone who turns to us for their service needs.

The Similarity Between Cockroaches and People

An intriguing study has shown that we may have more in common with cockroaches than we’d like to think. Research led by Dr. Mark Stoeckle, a specialist in infectious disease at Rockefeller University, has shown that New York cockroaches tend to stick around the neighborhoods they were born in, and segregate themselves into groups of similar cockroaches.

“Once they move in, they don’t leave,” says Stoeckle. “This is a window into cockroach society, and it is very much like our own.” Dr. Stoeckle has analyzed 125 cockroach specimens that were shipped to his lab on the Upper East Side over the past year.

His research indicates that cockroaches from different parts of New York—such as the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, and Roosevelt Island—belong to different gene pools. This makes sense: cockroaches don’t drive to visit other cockroaches in different boroughs too often; once they’re in a region, most of them will remain there.

And it appears that even subtle environmental differences between different regions of New York City have caused cockroaches to evolve in slightly different ways. Some of these factors could be lighting, the availability of different foods, other invasive species, and different types of buildings.

There are around 4,600 distinct cockroach species that have been identified around the world (which means there are probably many more that have yet to be discovered). But there are only four main species that are pests in the US: the American cockroach, the German cockroach, the Oriental cockroach, and the Asian cockroach.

The most common type in US homes is the German cockroach, which is slightly smaller and usually hides under furniture. It’s thought to have arrived in New York with the first few waves of European immigrants.

The American Cockroach

The American cockroach, also known as the “water bug” is one of the most abundant pests in the United States.  They are reddish-brown in color and are about 1-1.5” in length with 6 legs and antennas. They do possess wings, but they fly very rarely. When young, American Cockroaches are greyish in color and become browner as they grow.

The American cockroach seeks shelter inside when the temperatures outside start to get cool. They prefer a warm atmosphere and hence are likely to be found in small narrow spaces. One way to know if your house is infected by American Cockroaches is their eggs, which they lay almost everywhere they have trodden. From furniture corners to books to boxes, their eggs will be all over the place, which makes identifying them very easy.

The eggs are usually of a capsule shapes, are 7-8mm in length and are always stuck to a particular object. In terms of food, the American cockroach likes to feed on decaying matter, however, scavenges will feed on anything, from food to book bindings and even wallpaper. One can also identify cockroach infestation in the house with a distinct smell that these American cockroaches leave behind, but it is very subtle and only a very few people can pick it up.

Roach Exterminators for Homes

When you see cockroaches hanging around your home or business, you can be sure that they are after something like food or water. In some instances, they take refuge inside your property for shelter. Since they scavenge for food, they can be found anywhere there is food. Surprisingly they also eat things like paint, wallpaper paste, and books.

Since they can spread diseases and germs, they are very harmful to have around. The germs they carry are spread easily since cockroaches crawl on areas that are unsanitary, such as, bathroom floors, and rodent nesting places, garbage cans, and sewers.

Some people do not even realize that their home is currently a breeding ground for cockroaches. The harmful diseases they spread are also spread through their droppings. Let Rest Easy Pest Control put together a complete pest control maintenance program to ensure that the problem you’re experiencing doesn’t become worse than it is.

Our plan involves our conducting a thorough site inspection and installing baiting stations in key areas of your home or business. They will also teach you the best ways to prevent a cockroach infestation from ever occurring.

What You Can Do

The American Cockroach usually comes into the house through narrow spaces, openings, and cracks such as air ducts, utility pipes and worse of all sewer connections. They are mostly found in the kitchen, as that is a place which holds lots of food, as well as damp and wet spaces such as the sink.

So it is wise to keep the counters and sinks clean and dry at all times to prevent infestation. The other place would be bathrooms, given their damp atmosphere, as well as attics, basements and laundry rooms where they can usually be found by the dozens.

Furniture, food, and clothes are only a part of the things that are infected when they come in contact with an American Cockroach. The real harm is done when the infections reach us. These American Cockroaches mostly come in from the sewers which means they are filled with bacteria and germs that can be hazardous to one’s health.

Keeping the gutters, overflowing sinks and leaked pipes in check is very important, as is a proper drainage system. These can be tricky to deal with, and so in times like these, it is once again best to call upon the pros like Rest Easy Pest Control. They can help provide proper drainage in the right places so there are fewer chances of these pests crawling back up.

Roaches in House, Apartment, and Restaurant

Restaurants offer all that cockroaches want and need to live off of. They are attracted to rotting food, sewers, garbage cans, and sewers. You may not realize that your restaurant is currently a breeding place for large numbers of cockroaches. They spread dangerous germs through garbage and spoiled food.

Wherever they end up, they take those same germs right along with them. If they come inside your restaurant, those germs will now be present in your establishment. It is very easy for them to enter your restaurant.

They come in on paper bags, in rental equipment, in cans and storage boxes. Some restaurants have infestations that they are not aware of until someone brings the problem to their attention. This means your problem may be worse then you can even imagine.

How to Make A Cockroach Trap

The cockroach is the only insect whose name doubles as an effective insult. You wouldn’t call someone you didn’t like a “spider” or an “ant,” but referring to them as a “cockroach” can be rather satisfying. The main character in the 1983 classic, Scarface, felt the same way—before shouting his iconic “Say hello to my little friend!” line, Tony Montana refers to the assailants coming to murder him as “little cockroaches.”

They come out at night to eat trash and other filth, they make a hissing noise, and their flat, slimy bodies aren’t easy on the eyes. When you combine these features with their legendary hardiness—due to their high resistance to radiation, cockroaches are popularly imagined to “inherit the Earth” after a nuclear holocaust—cockroaches have a long history of being highly unwelcome and annoyingly persistent house guests.

It’s probably no coincidence that cockroaches are very closely related to another dreaded pest: the termite.

It can be hard to tell if you have cockroaches because they are notorious for hiding from the light. But if you do (or think you may), here’s how to make an ingenious roach-trap: get a deep, smooth-walled jar, fill it with an inch or two of beer, and place it directly against a wall (or with sticks laying against the jar, leading from the ground to the opening at the top).

The roaches will be attracted to the smell of the beer, they’ll climb into the jar, and fall inside. They won’t be able to climb out (due to the smooth sides), and will quickly drown in the beer.

Other good practices for preventing cockroaches are to seal food and water in closed containers, to use garbage cans with tight lids, to vacuum regularly, and to seal off possible entry points with caulk or putty.
